The most horrible thing I have ever come across!
December 18, 2014
To Whom It May Concern, I would like to start off by saying that about 4 weeks ago, I went to a salon and paid 170$ to get a gorgeous, red dye job. I loved it, but knew that red fades quickly, and so acknowledged that I would have to tone and shine and seal it between dyeing. About 2 weeks later, I touched it up for the first time, as I noticed some areas were fading. I had a professional use Redken to tone the red back in, and ended up with a horrible color that I could only describe as "shit brown". I was very upset, and after waiting a day I dyed it using a cheap hair dye from Sally's, which brought it back to my beautiful red. A week or so later, I decided to give Redken another chance, deciding that it must have been a poor choice of toner by the stylist, and that I perhaps had not asked for a bright enough red. I went to another place, and, with the help of another, well-respected, licensed stylist, got the reddist red Redken toners had. I followed the directions 100%, and once again ended up with SHIT BROWN HAIR! Did I also mention the horrible, chemical smell my hair has now from the supposed "toner", that I have never experienced with any other brand EVER?! Now I have to wait, wash and strip my hair, and apply the cheap dye again. In the meantime, I get to smell like chemicals all day and have a hair color that I hate. Redken "toner" not only failed to refresh and gloss my bright red, but went to far as to STRIP THE COLOR OUT COMPLETELY! What the fuck is that all about?! I would explain why this is absurd, but apparently no one at Redken has any inkling about how to deal with hair care products at all, and I feel that no one would understand me if I explained the hair-care process. If anyone DID understand, then we wouldn't be having this discussion, would we? This is the angriest I have ever been at a product, and am disgusted with the fact that you dare to advertise your reds line so fervently, considering the fact that you're basically selling packaged crap-in-a-bottle. This is, by far, the worst product I have ever had the misfortune of coming across, and I will devote my full energy at complaining on every review, every website, every blog, every youtube channel, and to every, single person I happen to come across. I am even going to upload my OWN youtube video with before and after pictures as PROOF that your shitty product is deceptive and defective! I have been unhappy with products before, but never have I been pushed to this limit. This product is disgusting, worthless, and most definitely not-as-advertised. If any more damage happens to my hair due to my having to re-dye it to fix this God-awful mistake, I will personally seek out a lawsuit against Redken. You are clearly marketing a bleacher and stripper as a "toner and depositor", which is ridiculous and an outright lie! At the very least, if this toner had not brightened my red, it should have darkened it if I had left it on too long, or done nothing if I had washed it out too soon. Under NO circumstances should my hair have been stripped of all color all together, lightened and made to smell like a chemical spill at a nuclear plant! Once again, this is a horrible product that is good for nothing but stripping paint off of walls! I am determined to spread the word about this, so no one else has to go through this anger and frustration like I did. I take very good care of my hair and resent the fact that I have to put it through so much torture to undo the mistake that a "professional" brand did to it! Absolutely ridiculous! I could use paint thinner and not have as horrible results as I did with your product! Shame on you for pretending to know what you're doing! Wishing your company nothing but failure from here on out, Deanna p.s. I tried to send an email through your website, but conveniently had an "error" when I filed it under a complaint. Must be nice to be able to ignore complaints and pretend you don't suck!
Pros:
NOTHING!
Cons:
EVERYTHING!

09N - Toned Out 80% of the Brass & Yellow
October 30, 2014
I highlighed/bleached my hair with Goldwell's Highlighting Kit and many of my highlights were left peach or light yellow...I used Redken Shades EQ Gloss in 09N and it toned 80% of the peach and yellow out of my hair. It's been 12 days since I toned with this Gloss and it needs to be toned again, but I'm going to wait another week. I gave 09N 4 stars instead of 5 because I was hoping the Gloss would have held out 3 weeks instead of 2.
Pros:
Toned Out 80% of Brass & Yellow
Cons:
Only Lasted 2 Weeks

08N MUCH DARKER THAN PICTURED!
October 9, 2014
I recently used Goldwell's Top Chic 8NA with 20 Vol. and it left my hair what I would describe a 7A with brassy/orange roots. So a week later I decided to try the Redken Shades EQ Color Gloss in 08N. I knew the gloss wouldn't lighten my hair, but I didn't want to darken my hair anymore either... I just wanted to tone the brassy roots that I got from Goldwell's Top Chic 8NA. I left 08N gloss on 15 minutes and it darkened my hair an entire 2 shades to a 6A (a Light Ash Brown). It's been two weeks and several washes since I used this gloss and my hair has not lightened at all...Granted I only used the regular Redken Cream and didn't add in any of the "Clear", but it shouldn't have darkened my hair two shades!!! And it smells awful...every time I've used heat on my hair since I used this the horrible smell comes out again.
Pros:
Took out the Brass
Cons:

Love this!
September 29, 2014
This is the first time I've tried to treat my own hair. But, after the last "that's not what I asked for" $150 salon job, I figured it was worth a try. A friend recommended this product. It was fairly easy to use and I love the results -- it really toned down the overdone bleach job, and my hair feels much softer and less damaged. I will definitely buy this again! Thank you so much.
Pros:
much cheaper than a salon treatment, with better results better color softer hair that looks and feels healthier

Have Auburn Hair Naturally and wanted to add color without deposit. Used Orange Kicker with clear (1:1) and was beautiful. Fades fast but there is no deposit meaning hair won't "brown out" or get darker. =). Im going to try mixing red and orange kickers next!

I'm a slowly graying natural redhead and I absolutely love shades EQ. I mix 4 colors to get a natural red color and it comes out perfect every time. Red is such a hard color to achieve a natural look, but with Shades EQ you can do it. I use 9NB,9AA,7G and 8C.

Does the Job--Temporarily
July 17, 2014
I buy this because it costs me half the amount to glaze my hair at home than it does in the salon. This glaze lasts about as long as a salon glaze. The problem is that they all seem to wash out around the 3 week mark, especially red. It's easy to use and the first week or two the color looks amazing. You just have to do it too often for my liking, but that's the nature of a glaze. The product itself is just as good as any glaze I've ever got in a salon. The hair is left vibrant and shiny.

Buttery Blonde
July 13, 2014
This is the PERFECT buttery blonde shade. I use it with a little neutral and a little violet and it calms the yellow down while retaining the warmth my sallow skin tone needs to look right. Tip: There's a night and day difference between the performance quality of Shades EQ when used with heat. I wrap my head in saran wrap and turn on a hair dryer for 20 minutes and voila! Also, using 1/2 clear in my formula when I want to just tone creates a beautiful, translucent shine while correcting the yellow from the bleach.
Pros:
Long lasting when used with heat

Decent
June 2, 2014
This glaze is decent, but after one or two washes it fades. I feel the one in the salon lasts a little big longer, but I'm sure that is because you sit under a hooded dryer, which I do not own. It's good for when you're color needs a little boost and you don't have time to get to the salon.

Deep Brown Red Undertones
April 30, 2014
03 RB will give you a Deep Brown Color with Red Undertones. It can be mixed with other shades if you want an inbetween shade, say for instance 6RB is too light then add a cap of 3 RB to deepen it a touch. But beware shades EQ is a deposit only Demi Permanent Hair Color, so it will not life at all like Regular Permanent Haircolor. I feel it is a shade darker than what you expect it to be. Check out Shades EQ Utube Video by Redken before choosing your shade
Pros:
Shine Condition You can correct unwanted brassiness or Undertones with Certain Shades EQ
Cons:
Lasts only 28 Shampoos

Why Pay the Salon when you can DIY?
April 24, 2014
I have red highlights in my hair (which is naturally dark brown). They always fade after a few shampoos. I use this at home with 10 volume and the color gets refreshed. It lasts as long as a salon glaze, for a fraction of the cost. I mix it with the 10 volume, put saran wrap on my head, and blast it with the blow dryer for about 15-20 minutes. Hair gets a nice boost of color and shine. The tricky part is picking and or mixing the right colors for your hair--but with a little trial and error you can get it right.

Hello i have medium to light brown hair. Its coarse and very curly but is now mostly wavy on top because i iron my hair with a chi iron most days. My mother is a cosmetologist and does my hair.she uses vlights bleach with 30 vol to lighten my roots.it comes out very light blonde with yellowish undertones. She then tones with redken shades eq 9v platinum ice. I love love love the way it comes out but after 3-4 washes its out. What can i do to keep the desired look. Do i need to tone bi weekly or is there something to make it last longer or is there a permanent version of the 9v platinum ice toner.

By MAIIA from San Jose, CA on June 14, 2014

It depends what is your color level. F.ex. if you have the color that has 7 level (in Redken color chart) you can coloring your hair with 7NB

I have been using midway couture for about 15 yrs and want to change to Redken Shades EQ. The color combination I use is 7/8G golden brown and 4/5N Brown equal parts. Can someone please suggest a color for me. I'm about 75 percent grey and want to go completely grey someday.
By michelle from kinnelon, nj on February 26, 2012

Answer:
Ive been using shades eq 7nb chestnut all winter. It's s warm brown with a hint of red/caramel.
When spring time arrives I switch to 7gb butterscotch it's a golden beige. It's pretty! Not too gold or yellow. It's a warm caramel color. I've also used 5n walnut. That's a basic dark brown. The shades eq is great for shine. Also makes your hair feel healthy and strong. The color doesn't last long. I usually apply it every 4 weeks.
Redken just came out with shades eq color cream. It last longer and is richer in color. I just tried it last week for the first time. It's super shiny tho the color choices are limited.
Sleekhair doesn't sell it yet. I'm hoping they will soon.
But the original shades eq is great. If I were you. I would mix 7gb with 5n. That sounds like what your using now.
The good thing is. If you don't love the color. It washes out pretty quick!
By Erika from PA on February 26, 2012

Answer:
I would have to look at the whole Redken color chart to figure that out. I think if you go to the Redken website they have a shade progression progression chart. I have very dark brown hair and have gotten a lot gray this past year. I won't use anything but Shades. It actually makes my hair stronger, thicker, and shinier. Don't be afraid to go a little darker for a richer color. It blends nicely after two washes.

Can you send me a picture of your current color?

I've used Shades EQ for several years now, and I'm a dark brunette. I don't know the color brand that you were using, but I'm also not a stylist. You may want to try 04 NB Maple--medium neutral brown and 05G Caramel --light golden brown. Maple is too light for me, but very pretty; though the "Neutral Browns" all seem to have some red undertones in them, just fyi. Shades Eq colors (the semi-permanent) are very forgiving, and will blend into your gray -- you'll maybe have to try a few different combinations to find the right look for you. Have fun!

Hi. My stylist (b4 leaving the salon I go to) normally colored my hair with Redken Shades Eq. My natural is about a level 4 (med. brown) and I'm looking to do a chocolate brown. Any suggestions in what color(s) to use? I'm not looking to have a lot of red, just a nice warm tone. Thanks!

Hi I have 1B color hair. And would like to lift enough to achieve the below color. I was leaning towards 3RV but have read these shades pull dark? Should I use 4rv instead? I also want to highlight a little and was thinking 5rv? If I am completely off base please help!
By Maiia from San Jose, CA on April 13, 2014

Answer:
If your hair was colored, you can't use color lighter, only darker or the same.
The color can't light other color.
So you'll choose the color of 1 level or high-lift your hair with bleach powder.

Hi
I have a light brown hair and want to color it black and add shine to it but I'm not sure which product to buy. Also, is this product comes already mixed with the processing solution? Or do I have to buy that separately?
Thanks
By MAIIA from San Jose, CA on January 7, 2014

Answer:
You can try 01B - it is black. SHADES EQ Color Gloss is mixed in a 1:1 ratio of Shades EQ Color Gloss to Processing Solution. The Redken Shades EQ Processing Solution is sold separately.

Hello, I am looking for assistance with color selection for Revlon EQ Shades. I previously used Clairol 2nd Nature mixing 4RO Light Red Orange Brown and 7R0 Medium Red Orange Blonde equal parts with 20 Developer. My natural haircolor is medium brown and I like a warm auburn brown color.

What Redken shades should I combine to achieve this color?

Thank you,
Cathy Gallina

The base color of my hair is Violet however I have some highlights throughout my head which are red in color... My question is which glaze should I use violet or red ? If violet-will it kill my red highlites? Or if i use red , will my whole head become red?? Thank you guys!:)))
By MAIIA from San Jose, CA on January 7, 2014

Answer:
If you will use red color, your violet part of hair will be a little more red, but still violet. If you will use violet shadow over all hair it will "kill" your red highlights.

You need to mix the color gloss with an equal amount of processing solution (developer). In a 1:1 ratio.

SHADES EQ Color Gloss is mixed in a 1:1 ratio of Shades EQ Color Gloss to Processing Solution. Always mix in equal parts and use immediately. Standard timing is 20 minutes at room temperature. For more vibrant results, process 15 minutes with plastic cap under a pre-heated warm dryer. Remove cap and cool for 5 minutes.
