Rusk Thermal Shiny Str8 - Permanent Straightener (formaldehyde-free)
VIEW ALL PRODUCTS BY Rusk
Item Code : 7884
Most straightening products use harsh chemicals, which can leave the hair dry and lifeless. Less caustic products fail to straighten the hair permanently. Rusk Thermal Str8 is a unique approach, which provides internal conditioning and beneficial protection through its combination of Vitamin B5, Soy Proteins, Wheat Proteins and Keratin Amino Acids. The Rusk Thermal Str8 system is then used with the Rusk Ceramic Str8 Iron, resulting in permanently straightened hair that is smooth, shiny and healthy.
Rusk Thermal Str8 provides straight, shiny, healthy hair . Designed to be used with the Rusk Ceramic Str8 iron, this system uses Vitamin B5, Soy Protein and Keratin Amino Acids to prepare the hair for superior, permanent straightening results. This breakthrough formula contains Thermplex: a unique combination of ingredients, which, when heat-activated, will "Internally Restructure" hair from the inside out. This system straightens and conditions the hair, imparting a new, smoother texture.
Rusk Thermal Str8 Internal Restructuring System is available in 2 formulas:
- Normal / Tinted formula: For use on healthy, virgin hair or hair previously colored with semi or demi permanent hair colors, processed with less than 20 volume peroxide.
- Virgin / Resistant formula: For use on coarse, resistant virgin hair, or resistant hair that has been color-treated using semi permanent, demi permanent or no-lift permanent hair color.

I have very coarse, wiry, tightly curled hair. I had this straigthening method first done in 2003 and continue to have every 8 to 9 months on average (depending on the season for humidity). My stylist encouraged me to try the Brazilian Keratin Treatment instead in 5/11 and it didn't last 2 months. You need to make sure the person doing it flat irons the hair twice (from root to end) and that you don't sweat, get your hair wet, use clips, etc. for 72 hours. It is worth the wait!! Also if your stylist will turn the ends of the hair under during the second flat iron session, the hair won't look like the end of a broom. I highly recommend this!!
Pros:
results are permanent; lasts for 7 to 9 months; hair feels smooth and is shinyCons:
smells bad and it is expensive if you use someone very skilled in the process (ex. $100 hour) and mine takes 6 hoursI would recommend this item to a friend.

Love this stuff!

By Claire from Georgia on February 24, 2011
I decided almost a year ago to have my hair straightened. I got my hairdresser to purchase a product for me, and she chose the Rusk Str8 Straightener. The results from this were amazing! I have coarse, thick, medium-length hair that is moderately wavy (and not the pretty wavy). It took almost 4 hours to process it. I can now just wash my hair and let it dry on it's own if I want to. My hair grows fairly quickly, but I was able to go for 9 months before I had to re-straighten it. Next time I'll probably have it done after 7-8 months because it had grown out about 6 inches although it still looked pretty good. The smell is bad, but the results are great!Pros:
Formaldehyde-free, doesn't seem to be so harsh, straightens very wellCons:
The smell is awful!I would recommend this item to a friend.

Save yourself some money

By Gwen from Amsterdam, Netherlands on June 11, 2010
The past two years I've had the Rusk Thermal Str8 process done by a professional hairsalon, which cost me up to 380 USD per treatment. I have frizzy afro curls, but this treatment leaves my hair silky soft, straight and healthy looking.I was a little hestitant trying to do this myself [with the help of my boyfriend], but it's quite easy and most of all saves you a lot of money. Just make sure you use a high quality flat iron and start early in the day, because with long hair, it may take up to 6 hours to complete the process. But it's truly worth the extra savings.
Pros:
Leaves you with soft, healthy looking and straight hairCons:
When your hair grows out, it's a lot of work to keep your hair straight at the rootsAn Incredible Product! So Worth the Money!

By Maribel C. from Bronxville, NY on June 2, 2010
I had my professional hair dresser use this product on my hair because I was tired of the frizziness and puffy hair. This is the second time I've done it and I am so impressed by it's results. My hair was soft, shiny and NO FRIZZ at all! I keep getting compliments from people all the time! I wouldn't do this on myself because you can overprocess and damage your hair, but it is really worth doing if you know someone who can follow instructions. I'll stick to having my hair dresser do it for me. She's a professional and knows what she's doing. The only issue is when it starts to grow out. The roots will be a nuisance when it grows out, but it will last about 6 months or more. Must try! You won't regret it!I would recommend this item to a friend.

All my life I've been looking for a product to help manage my naturally curly hair, which I love but needs some help conforming into sleek styles and weather proofing. I barely have to brush my hair at all anymore. I can run my fingers through it easily and I still have my natural waves. Or I can brush-dry it sleek. Hair-loss from styling has diminshed almost completely and I'm finally frizz free. And the best part is my hair can grow as long as I want to let it. No more cutting off chemically damaged ends. I use curling irons, blow dryers, hairspray only when I'm taking photos or have a special meeting.AWEFUL!!!

I researched keratin retexturizing products for quite some time before deciding on this one....big mistake. It is NOTHING like a salon keratin treatment, which I have had. Although it is formadehyde free, it is nothing but a perm solution that you apply, then flat iron. It has the same odor as a perm solution and breaks hair the same way, if you over process. I paid over $50 and could have gotten the same solution for $10 and done the same thing. Next time I will go with a Brazilian Keratin product. I think people who rave about this are lucky and don't really know what else is available. The end result was just ok...nothing great.Pros:
formaldehyde freeCons:
over rated, over priced, has a horrible odor,HELP HELP HELP

By str8 hair from Michigan on January 25, 2010
Please tell me what came with this product. I have had a really expensive japanese str8ner done at the salon and it cose me almost 800, which worked great. They used a protective cream on my hair to not let my hair over process, a scalp/ root protecter, extremly hot flat irons to seal in the str8ner in my hair and then a neatrilzer to finalize the str8ner(everything turned out beautiful but this Rusk st8tner looks like it does the same and I want to get it.) My question is did anyone of you need to do the flat iron process that usually takes about a few hours at the salon?? And does it come with any protectors to protect the hair from damage??? PLEASE HELP IM SO INTERESTED IN THIS PRODUCTBest thing that has ever happened to my hair!

I have been struggling with super dry, frizzy and super curly hair all my life. I've tried many different hair relaxers at salons and at home but never got the results I wanted. After trying rusk i got results beyond my expectations. This is a revolutionary product for curly hair. I did it at home and it worked wonders. It did not damage my hair at all even though I bleach my hair constantly. My hair is not puffy anymore, it looks sleek and helathy. I will use this for rest of my life, absolutely satisfied. I would recommend this item to a friend.
This stuff is AWESOME!!

By Mandy from Washington on November 28, 2009
I've had a pro do this for me for the past two years (every six months), to the tune of $250. After watching her do it, I feel comfy guiding my husband through the process. I HIGHLY recommend this product. It is fabulous- gave me the hair texture I've always wanted. Pros:
Does what it claims- straight, shiny hair.Cons:
The process can be long, depending on your hair length.I would recommend this item to a friend.
Amazing

By Rachel from St. Petersburg, Florida on October 6, 2009
Used this product with the help of a friend. It did take some time but the results are SOO worth it. I have curly hair and iron my hair often, the results are amazing with this treatment. While blow drying it after the first treatment not a single curl or frizz came back, I didn't even believe what I was seeing. Great product and well worth the price. Couldn't be happier, the picture on the box is definitely accurate.Pros:
Getting ready to go out takes minutes, not an hour.Cons:
Use in a ventilated room or outside if possible, very strong smell.I would recommend this item to a friend.

I'm getting my hair straightened @ the end of June w/the Rusk product...I'm scared, but after reading the customer reviews I feel better about it. This product is excellent: It seems this is "recommended to use by a profesional"..oh., please. A beauty parlor charges you more than 500 dollars for this. This, believe me, you can do it your self.Review for Rusk Thermal Shiny Str8 - Permanent Straightener formaldehyde-free
