Rusk Thermal Shiny Str8 - Permanent Straightener is a formaldehyde-free, intensive reconditioning therapy system. Also known as the "Japanese Straightening" or "Thermal Reconditioning" system, the Rusk Thermal Str8 Internal Restructing System permanently straightens excessively curly or wavy hair while leaving it in optimum condition.

Most straightening products use harsh chemicals, which can leave the hair dry and lifeless. Less caustic products fail to straighten the hair permanently. Rusk Thermal Str8 is a unique approach, which provides internal conditioning and beneficial protection through its combination of Vitamin B5, Soy Proteins, Wheat Proteins and Keratin Amino Acids. The Rusk Thermal Str8 system is then used with the Rusk Ceramic Str8 Iron, resulting in permanently straightened hair that is smooth, shiny and healthy.

Rusk Thermal Str8 provides straight, shiny, healthy hair . Designed to be used with the Rusk Ceramic Str8 iron, this system uses Vitamin B5, Soy Protein and Keratin Amino Acids to prepare the hair for superior, permanent straightening results. This breakthrough formula contains Thermplex: a unique combination of ingredients, which, when heat-activated, will "Internally Restructure" hair from the inside out. This system straightens and conditions the hair, imparting a new, smoother texture.

Rusk Thermal Str8 Internal Restructuring System is available in 2 formulas:

  • Normal / Tinted formula: For use on healthy, virgin hair or hair previously colored with semi or demi permanent hair colors, processed with less than 20 volume peroxide.
  • Virgin / Resistant formula: For use on coarse, resistant virgin hair, or resistant hair that has been color-treated using semi permanent, demi permanent or no-lift permanent hair color.

For Tinted Hair - Amazing result
August 22, 2016
Had this done a few years ago, absolutely chuffed to bits, amazing outcome. Can wash my hair and leave it, or dry it, it's superb. It lasted 'nine' months the first time. Now struggling to source this amazing product in the UK. Absolutely gutted I'm struggling to find it.
Pros:
Brilliant results
Cons:
Sitting in salon for four hours

Severely Damaged Hair
May 11, 2016
I had this treatment done on April 18, 2016 .. never has my hair been damaged until now. To say that I am sick over this is putting it mildly. I have very wavy hair and had both the Keratin and Brazilian treatments done in the past with beautiful results. I typically have it straightened every 7 to 8 months. Enter new salon, new hairdresser. This product was used without my knowledge (evan after asking 3 times which product is being used) ... I trusted the stylist knew what she was doing. The process was a disaster .. my hair is more unruly now than ever, feels like there is sand in it, and severely damaged. It takes me over an hour (the length is just below my neck) to dry and straighten as well as using at least 5 different styling products. With the Keratin and Brazilian treatments, it literally took me 15 minutes to do my hair with silky, smooth results (and no products needed). I am consulting with another styllst (different salon) as to what my options are regarding the damage to my hair.

Did not straighten my wavy hair
March 19, 2016
I typically have my hair straightened with a different product every 9 months. After washing, I can let it air dry, without using any heat it is straight and shiny. This time, I went to a new place and the hairdresser used the Rusk Str8 system. By day 2 after the treatment some of my wave was returning. I waited 4 days to wash - and my hair has the same wave on the regrowth as it did before the treatment, but now my hair feels processed and is dry, heavy and coarse. This did not straighten my hair and left it damaged. My hairdresser claimed she had taught classes on straightening systems, and it was the product, not her iron or technique. I spent 5 hours, $500 to have my hair tugged on and damaged. I am afraid to have it redone with any other product now.
Cons:
Left my hair damaged without any straightening

Changed my life
January 28, 2015
I have thick, coarse, spiral curly hair. I've been using this product for the last 5 years. It makes my hair softer, smoother and cuts down straightening time by an hour or more. My hair is slightly wavy after using it.

Careful, This product does contain a 'relaxer' chemical....
October 18, 2013
I decided to have this process performed on my daughters thick, curly, ethnic hair. Her hair had become such a problem to do, since I stopped putting relaxer in it. My friend recommended the product. Her sister is a stylist and put it in my friends children hair as well as her own. Problem, they insisted there was no relaxer in the product. So I agreed. After she washed my daughters hair and started applying the product, I smelled the distinct smell of relaxer! I told her, Hey, that's relaxer, she insisted it was not, that it was a keratin treatment. No, I told her to give me the box. First ingredient, ammonium thioglycolate. This is whats used in Jheri Curls, Wave Nouveau, Affirm, etc. I was soo upset. I'm a Chemistry Graduate, I know perm when I smell it. Anyway, then she was leaving it on for what seemed to me a long time. She said it could stay on indefinitely. Wrong, I know better. I told her to wash it out after 15min! OK, so she continued the process, and my daughters hair did come out beautiful. It was shiny and bone straight. I dont think even the Dominican round brush could have done a better job. But I knew better not to be too elated. Because with the time she left the thio on her hair and the fact I know my daughters hair really doesnt do well with chemicals, time would be the true deciding factor. It has been 3 months now, and I have noticed breakage in my daughters hair. Not much and in hidden areas, but those first couple of weeks I was sweeping alot of hair off the floor. I try to keep it moisturized ( remember, Thio must be moist!! or it dries out your hair and will make it dull and brittle) but it is dry still. Her hair grows extremely fast and now it really looks like she could use another visit. But I was told they dont do a touch up, they just do they whole process all over again. Not sure if I want that now...Maybe I'll wait another couple of months.
Pros:
Definitely Shiny and Bone Straight after initial process. Maintenance of my daughters hair is 100% easier and less time consuming.
Cons:
Although there may not be any Formaldehyde, There is Ammonium Thioglycolate (perm/relaxer) Pick your poison

Works!
August 15, 2013
Worked really well on ethnic hair. My daughter has very tight curls when her hair is wet. After having it professionally done, her hair looks great. Its straight from the roots to the ends. She loves it!
Pros:
everything. A little expensive to have it professionally done ($220). Just waiting to see how long it last
Cons:
Does smell bad. Even leaves a little smell after its finally done

Impressed - really did the job
July 3, 2013
First product was major fail, so my hairdresser used this on me. I am thrilled! I have pretty curly hair and definite frizz in the humidity. After this product, my hair is super soft and it really did straighten most of my hair. The back is a bit curly and some of the ends have a flip but a quick use of the blow dryer took care of that. No more spending all that time in the heat styling/straightening just to have it frizz up when I walked outside! Everyone's hair is different, but I'd say this worked better than my Coppola Keratin treatment. Only down side is it does smell a bit like perm for a couple of days but having washed twice, it's perfect! Love, Love this product!
Pros:
Super smooth hair, no goo left on for days, worked perfectly on my color-treated hair
Cons:
A bit smelly, process still takes about 2 hours, no washing for 48 hours - but that's normal for this type of process

Product is crap!
April 14, 2013
I am 35 yrs old and have used everything and this is the worst straightner I have ever used and was charged 200 dollars for something that made my hair look worse than it did before. My hair looked better before I put the str8 on my hair. Ands yes I did exactly what I was supose to do and waited until I was told to wash it.
Pros:
It took the curls out but left my hair dry and lifeless.
Cons:
Don't do it not worth the money. My hair was beautiful before I used the straightener, now it's just fried.

Did not work
November 6, 2012
Went to salon for daughter's semi wavy/frizzy hair. Just washed after the 72 hour wait. Hair is only slightly smoother. However, there is still the same amount of frizz. She is very disappointed. I'm disappointed for the amount we spent and the disappointing results. Should have considered the Japanese treatment instead.

Great Product
March 9, 2012
I have borderline ethnic hair. Rusk Thermal Shiny Str8 really does a good job straightening my hair/new growth. I have been using for a few years now and have never had any issues. It is fairly easy to use with the help of another person. It takes me about 2 - 2 1/2 hours from start to finish. After trying a million other straighteners over the years, this one has done the best job of taming my kinky curly, frizzy hair.

Rusk Thermal Str8 Permanent Straightener - Experience
February 23, 2012
I just had this done this past Sunday (February 18), and my 72 hours was up just yesterday. After I washed my hair, I was not very pleased with the results. I used to have silky and shiny hair - it was just VERY curly and thick. Now, it feels even thicker, and all of my shine and silkiness is gone! Even after I get out of the shower, it's so hard to even brush it. I don't know if it's because this is still pretty fresh - but I really hope my hair can come back to life. I got a chemical relaxer done about 3 years ago - and my hair feels the same as the relaxer made it feel. Something tells me there are actually a lot more chemicals in this product then they try to make it out to be. Anyone else have this issue? Did it get solved over time? It sucks because I love having straight hair - I just think my straight hair looked better when I took 2 hours to straighten it when it was naturally curly. Now it just looks like a frizzy mess with way too much volume.
Pros:
It straightened my hair decently well.
Cons:
Did NOT leave it silky and smooth like promised. I expected a lot more than this. Also, the smell is not as bad as people make it out to be. It smells like anything permanent that people put in their hair.

Used 10 times since 2003
July 31, 2011
I have very coarse, wiry, tightly curled hair. I had this straigthening method first done in 2003 and continue to have every 8 to 9 months on average (depending on the season for humidity). My stylist encouraged me to try the Brazilian Keratin Treatment instead in 5/11 and it didn't last 2 months. You need to make sure the person doing it flat irons the hair twice (from root to end) and that you don't sweat, get your hair wet, use clips, etc. for 72 hours. It is worth the wait!! Also if your stylist will turn the ends of the hair under during the second flat iron session, the hair won't look like the end of a broom. I highly recommend this!!
Pros:
results are permanent; lasts for 7 to 9 months; hair feels smooth and is shiny
Cons:
smells bad and it is expensive if you use someone very skilled in the process (ex. $100 hour) and mine takes 6 hours

Love this stuff!
February 24, 2011
I decided almost a year ago to have my hair straightened. I got my hairdresser to purchase a product for me, and she chose the Rusk Str8 Straightener. The results from this were amazing! I have coarse, thick, medium-length hair that is moderately wavy (and not the pretty wavy). It took almost 4 hours to process it. I can now just wash my hair and let it dry on it's own if I want to. My hair grows fairly quickly, but I was able to go for 9 months before I had to re-straighten it. Next time I'll probably have it done after 7-8 months because it had grown out about 6 inches although it still looked pretty good. The smell is bad, but the results are great!
Pros:
Formaldehyde-free, doesn't seem to be so harsh, straightens very well
Cons:
The smell is awful!

Pros:
the time you'll save in blow drying and straighting,

Save yourself some money
June 11, 2010
The past two years I've had the Rusk Thermal Str8 process done by a professional hairsalon, which cost me up to 380 USD per treatment. I have frizzy afro curls, but this treatment leaves my hair silky soft, straight and healthy looking. I was a little hestitant trying to do this myself [with the help of my boyfriend], but it's quite easy and most of all saves you a lot of money. Just make sure you use a high quality flat iron and start early in the day, because with long hair, it may take up to 6 hours to complete the process. But it's truly worth the extra savings.
Pros:
Leaves you with soft, healthy looking and straight hair
Cons:
When your hair grows out, it's a lot of work to keep your hair straight at the roots

An Incredible Product! So Worth the Money!
June 2, 2010
I had my professional hair dresser use this product on my hair because I was tired of the frizziness and puffy hair. This is the second time I've done it and I am so impressed by it's results. My hair was soft, shiny and NO FRIZZ at all! I keep getting compliments from people all the time! I wouldn't do this on myself because you can overprocess and damage your hair, but it is really worth doing if you know someone who can follow instructions. I'll stick to having my hair dresser do it for me. She's a professional and knows what she's doing. The only issue is when it starts to grow out. The roots will be a nuisance when it grows out, but it will last about 6 months or more. Must try! You won't regret it!

DEFINITELY DO IT YOURSELF AND BUY A NEW DRESS TOO!
February 21, 2010
All my life I've been looking for a product to help manage my naturally curly hair, which I love but needs some help conforming into sleek styles and weather proofing. I barely have to brush my hair at all anymore. I can run my fingers through it easily and I still have my natural waves. Or I can brush-dry it sleek. Hair-loss from styling has diminshed almost completely and I'm finally frizz free. And the best part is my hair can grow as long as I want to let it. No more cutting off chemically damaged ends. I use curling irons, blow dryers, hairspray only when I'm taking photos or have a special meeting.

my client has colored treated hair with a level 6 hair color, she has very coarse curly eghptian hair with hard to cover gray can I use this product on her, I have been using the la brazilian keritan treatment on her and even the strongest one only lasts maybe 2 wks and still takes me an hour to flat iron afterwards, she really wants something stronger but all the japanese straighters say to use on semi or demi and we use 20 volume. can you suggest something better but not real damaging?
By Valeria Turner from Conyers, GA (ATL) on May 10, 2013

Answer:
Just know that this is a "permanent" straightening system. Make sure that your client is looking for permanent results, and it is recommended to have at least 4 inches of regrowth for touch ups.( The Brazilian Treatments and those similar are NOT permanent systems and last up to 8-10 weeks if applied accurately.) In regards to the color, you can use this on color-treated hair with no more than a 20 vol application and absolutely NO bleached hair, because it WILL break. I suggest applying this service before your color service, this system will slightly lighten your hair color. The results are Great!

I used the Rusk Therman Shiny Str8-Permanent Straightener with Keratin and it only lasted until I washed my hair. Several days later, when I washed the hair, the kink returned full force. I am looking for a beauty salon that uses the anti-curl formula which seems to last several months. Can you give me the names of several salons near or close to my zip code. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Dorie

Hi,

I am currently looking for a good straightening product for my hair, and Rusk Thermal Shiny Str8 seems to be good.

BUT...You say its formaldehyde-free…
Can I please get the ingredients list? Since it is not seen on the bad pixel picture you have here.

Because even though it is formaldehyde-free, some chemicals release the cancer causing formaldehyde under straightening procedures.

Best regards

How soon does the product expire after opening? So if I wanted to open it up and use a small amount for a test run, how long would I have to use up the product before it goes bad?
By Cheryl Sutton from Ashland, Ohio on March 28, 2012

Answer:
Directly from the instructions: Once product container has been opened, use within 24-48 hours. Exposure to atmospheric oxygen, once container has been opened, causes the product's efficacy to slowly diminish.

I personally have always used all the product in one setting. I love it!!!
