What it is:
One 'n Only Thermal Ionic Permanent Hair Straightener is a permanent, thermal reconditioning, ionic straightening system. One 'n Only Thermal Ionic Permanent Straightener is also known as the "Japanease Hair Straightening" or "Thermal Reconditioning" system because of Conair's revolutionary thermal ionic straightening formula. Thermal Ionic, in Conair One N Only formula, reconditions hair and restructures the cuticle so your hair lies flat and straight permanently, with a brilliant, silky, shine!

What it does:
The hair remains permanently straight until it is cut off or permed. However, the new growth will be curly and a retouch straightening service will be required after 68 months, depending on the rate of hair growth and the degree of curliness of the new growth.

What else you need to know:
Comes in 3 formulas:

  • Normal Formula: For use on healthy, virgin hair or hair previously colored with semi or demi permanent hair colors, processed with less than 20 volume peroxide.
  • Resistant Formula: For use on coarse, resistant virgin hair, or resistant hair that has been color-treated using semi permanent, demi permanent or no-lift permanent hair color.
  • Tinted / Highlighted / Bleached Forumula: For use on hair previously colored with permanent hair color processed with 20 volume or greater peroxide, bleached or double-processed hair.

  • ...

    More More

There are 3 basic steps in Conair One 'n Only Thermal Ionic Permanent Hair Straightener:
    I. The first step, after washing and conditioning the hair, is to treat the hair with Thermal Ionic Step 1 Lotion. This processing lotion softens the curl by relieving the internal stresses of the hair.
II. The second step thermally reconstructs the hair into the new straight configuration. This is accomplished by pressing the hair with a hot ceramic flat iron maintained at 170230C.
III. The third and final step is the treatment of the hair with the Step 2 Neutralizer. This step permanently locks the hair into a "pin-straight" configuration.

    Precautions:
    • If you or client has ever had an allergic reaction to a perm or other cosmetic product. Do not use Thermal Ionic.
    • Check your or clients scalp. If sores, abrasions or other abnormal conditions are present, do not Thermal Ionic.
    • Examine the condition of the hair, checking for breakage, discoloration, poor elasticity or texture. Always perform a strand test. If hair breaks or discolors after test strand is dried and combed, do not use Thermal Ionic.
    • If Step 1 drips on to skin, gently remove and blot skin immediately with water-soaked cotton.
    • Always wear protective gloves when using this product.
    • Do not allow any of Step 1 or Step 2 to contact eyes. If contact occurs, flush thoroughly with cool water. Seek medical attention if irratation persist.
    • Do not use Thermal Ionic and tint hair with Permanent hair color on the same day. Wait 7 to 10 days.
    • Do not use on hair that has been previoulsy treated with henna, metallic salts or color restorers.
    • Do not use Thermal Ionic on hair that has been previously straightened with relaxers containing lye (potassium, lithium, guanidins hydroxides, and sodium). Thermal Ionic can only be applied to the new growth, so it is best that a trained professional apply this product to your hair.
    • Thermal Ionic can be used on permed hair.
    • Natural hair color may change ( 2 shades lighter ) and color-treated hair may fade.
    • Products must be used at room temperture.
    • Do not shampoo hair for 48 hours after application of Thermal Ionic.
    • Once product container has been opened, use within 24 - 48 hours, oxygen will cause the product's efficacy to slowly diminish.
    • Processing time can range between 4 to 5 hours to complete.

    LOVED IT. **PLEASE READ**
    August 18, 2011
So my hair is really thick, curly, and frizzy. I hate it. I especially hate my roots they're always in super tight curls so I tried this product after my aunt (who is a hairdresser) recommended it. The first straightener I ever used was Japanese Thermal Straightening. It definitely didn't work on my hair as well as this product did. I scrolled up earlier and saw some pretty negative reviews, but I assure you if you use this product as directed, you should not encounter any problems! The negative comments are probably just people from other companies trying to promote their product instead. Anyways, so I thought I'd share a bit of my experience. During the Step one process, a warning was stated to stay away from the scalp for burning and irritation may occur. However, the roots are the most important thing to me, so I applied a heck of a lot of the product onto the roots while still trying to avoid the scalp as best as I could. I think I managed fine because my scalp wasn't irritated whatsoever. Also, for the section where the directions say to place a wrap over the head, I suggest just using saran wrap! Works like a charm. I left step one processing for 30 minutes. Once I washed it I had already noticed a HUGE difference, usually when I get out of the shower my curls are super tight but this time they were so loose and my hair felt so straight! (The first picture uploaded is what my hair looked like after washing out Step One) So after blowdrying and straightening, I applied the neutralizer. Again, my hair remained in such a straight configuration it was shocking. When I washed it out my hair after the final step I chose to let it air dry with no blow dryer or anything JUST so I could see what it would look like. Now, TYPICALLY when I used to let my hair AIR DRY or even BLOW DRY it would be in TIGHT TIGHT curls, super big and poofy, and very frizzy. And with blow drying it became all those things but multiplied to be even worse. THIS TIME (after conair straightening) my hair dryed to be a SOFT texture, lighter weight, A LOT less frizziness, A LOT looser curls. I guess you could describe my new hair perfectly by saying I now look like I have beachy wavy soft hair. The final photos are what the finished product looked like. I know it doesn't look completely straight but NO straightening system is going to give you that, you kind of have to settle for mediocre, but I LOVE it because I used to completely dread anyone seeing my hair it was hideous but now at least I can feel comfortable if I'm running late and don't wanna straighten my hair, at least now it looks DECENT. I'm impressed and that's all I have left to really say. Definitely reccommend this product, it's easier than it sounds just gotta follow directions. <3
    Pros:
Left hair with loosened up curls, softer texture, less frizziness, and no intense reaction to humidity. Makes hair managable, easier to wear out no need to straighten. Leaves a beautiful beach wave <3
    Cons:
The smell is repugnant, my mom and I wore masks. Also, chemicals are never good for your hair in the long run but at least it's worth it at the moment.

I cut my hair off after using this:(
    November 28, 2013
my hair was bleached and colored a few times. I used this and it made 3 inches on the ends frizzy and fried. Followed directions to the t and it only relaxed my hair. it gave me looser curls, but damaged my hair, so I cut it off and am starting over with no more harsh chemicals. My friend has un colored hair and uses the regular hair thermal ionic and it works good on her hair.
    Pros:
did relax the curl a little.
    Cons:
    fried my ends.

    LOVE IT!
    November 18, 2013
I have been using the One n' Only permanent hair straightener ( resistant formula) for approximately 8 years now and it is AMAZING! I used to get it done at the salon where it cost me upwards of $200 for a retouch so I decided to look for this product that my hair dresser was using and I found it at Sally's Beauty Supply for $32. My natural hair has extremely tight curls, almost afro-like, except my hair's texture is not as corse as most African-American women. I think that is why this product works so well is because the formula does not damage the way my hair used to get damaged from relaxers that are made for the texture and resistance of African-American hair. I usually have my sister do the first step for me and then I do the rest of it myself because they get too tired. However if you have someone that is willing to help you do it all, go for it! It usually doesn't take me more than 4 hours to go through the whole process. I use the shampoo and conditioner that is comes in the box with the relaxer and neutralizer, but I only use the conditioner on the ends of my hair (I do this because I always only have to do my roots because I never let my natural hair fully grow out). This prevents my hair that I got relaxed months ago from being unnecessarily damaged and it becomes more straight than the virgin hair at my roots (which makes it look kind of funny). If it is your first time getting all of your hair relaxed, I would suggest not to use the conditioner at all because the chemicals will NOT be as effective. One time I used the One n' Only conditioner on all of my head and after the whole process of getting my hair relaxed my hair was still curly and more damaged. Make sure to gently comb your hair to get the knots out after you shower to reduce breakage. For the first step, chemical treatment with relaxer, I use a hair brush that has stiff bristles (google this for a picture of a similar brush Spornette Little Wonder Brush from beautystoredepot.com, does not have to be this brand, any cheap brush with bristles will work). When you grab the piece of hair that you are going to comb the relaxer through, make sure you pull the hair to have some tension and comb it over and over again at the roots to extend the curls as much as possible. Be careful not to leave the relaxing chemical in your hair for too long because it can damage your hair and irritate your scalp. I usually leave it in for approximately 20-30 minutes after the relaxer has been combed through all of my hair. Additionally, I have always used my Chi straightener for the thermal treatment step and find that it works great. I also get the best final results when I blow dry my hair and straighten it AFTER I have rinsed the neutralizer out (the last step). So for the next 72 hours I don't wash, rinse or get it wet at all. Sometimes I have gone a week without washing it and just keep straightening it at the roots, this has always given me the best results but sometimes I can't last that long without washing my hair. Make sure that if its your first time getting all your hair done, to get a trim right after to reduce breakage. If you are getting retouched, make sure you get a hair cut every time your get your hair retouched! (note: my scalp is somewhat sensitive, but I still have my mom or sister put the relaxer as close to my scalp as possible to ensure that all of the curly is gone. This does cause a bit of irritation on the scalp, but it is tolerable and worth it!)
    Pros:
-Easy to do -Even if your hair at the roots is still not quite as straight as you wanted it after you've gone through and combed the relaxing chemical through your hair (step 1) and rinsed it, if you take your time when you are doing the next step ( thermal treatment using straightener) on these curly parts, it will help get the hair straighter
    Cons:
-Can irritate the scalp -If you have cuts on your head it can be very painful because of the chemicals -Your hair will get somewhat damage (remember, its chemicals that you are using)

Wasted 3 hours of my life
    June 10, 2013
To start- My package came in the mail late with part of the product spilled inside the box. I made sure to read the directions thoroughly and multiple times before starting the process and had all the recommended supplies. After finishing the entire 3 hour process my hair did not appear to be any straighter than normal, and went back to its normal curly texture immediately after my next shower (but still had the horrible burned smell). Overall I am completely unsatisfied with this product and would NOT recommend it to anyone.

    Waste of time & $
    May 10, 2013
So I have had keratin done to my hair and had pin straight results after showering and combing it leaving it to air dry. But since it's costly, I have my curls start growing out again and thought to use this product since majority of reviews wete positive. I rnded up buyjng it and trying it out thinking I'm not only saving myself $ but getting salon resilts, little did I know the results were nothing, my hair is still frizzy curly and it doesn't look like this product did its job although I haf someone do it for me following instructions to the tee. I'm disappointed because I can't afford salon prices for a keratin formula. Any alternatives to this which actually do the job it advertises???
    Pros:
Slightly softer but my hair is soft anyways
    Cons:
    Didn't work

    Works Easily and Beautifully
    April 22, 2013
I had my hairdresser friend help me with this and would not suggest trying this alone. My hair is thick and course and was completely virgin with unruly waves and curls. It is now smooth and healthy feeling. There are a few places where I have cowlicks etc that were resistant. I can't believe how awesome this worked. I just need to straighten a few small spots now rather than spending 30 mins sectioning and straightening my entire head. Highly recommend!! No more frizzy hair!! My hair did heat up slightly when neutralizer was applied. But didn't affect it...
    Pros:
Easy to use Smells mild Does the job
    Cons:
Instructions were not written very clearly. More info would be good Seemed to slightly lighten my natural hair colour?

Love this product i am mixed race have very curly unruly hair. And frizz beyond frizz. This product changed my life have been using it for about 8 years. Just shower and go!!! My hair has grown and been healthier than it ever has. Then they changed the product added keratin. What ever they did it fried my hair. 2 years of trying to regrow new hair so i could cut off all the fried hair. I loved their old product sooooo much that i continued to try again but not with the new product. I found some of the old product with out the keratin online but it was discontinued through the company. ANY ONE USING THE NEW ONE AND ONLY WITH KERATIN BEWARE!!!!!! AND BE PREPARED TO DEAL WITH DISASTROUS RESULTS!!!!!! Just warning everyone. Love the old product beware of the new. Just had my hair done yesterday. Love it!! Great to be back to normal.

Best Product For Worst Mixed Racial Hair
    August 28, 2012
This product has given me better results than any other product - I have tried them ALL for many years. Gradually, over this time, my Pacific Islander genes got more and more pronounced ... my hair got more and more afro but with "fly away" fine Caucasian qualities too ... mixed racial hair can be the worst hair on earth. NO SALON CHEMICAL STRAIGHTENING TREATMENTS WORK ANYMORE ... the hair just completely kinks up again, and goes back to it's original condition ***only more damaged***. One thing that always happens to me, after 'more natural' straightening (this product or Keratin), however, is that I get "kinky" hair - I always have to check the back of my head when I wake up - where I have slept on my hair - because it tends to "set a bit kinky" overnight. That happens with Keratin Brazilian straightening too. I just give it a quick spray of water and comb in moisturising lotion, in the morning. Or I might do a one minute blow dry of a difficult spot. By contrast, I think that chemical straightening PERMANENTLY affects the "bonds" of the hair, and is very damaging, whereas "Conair One 'n Only" - and Brazilian straightening products - don't do such extreme things to the BONDS ... perhaps the bonds of the hair are a little less likely to behave after treatment, and may need a little styling, but the hair is NOT DAMAGED which is far worse!!! I intend to use this product for the rest of my life. In between the Conair straightening process I will use Brazilian Keratin straightening treatments, which are so healthy they can be done "ALWAYS and FOREVER", ON TOP OF ANYTHING. This will be my way of maintaining the hair UNTIL THE ROOTS HAVE GROWN ENOUGH for another treatment of "Conair One 'n Only Thermal Ionic Permanent Hair Straightener" ---- the Conair stuff will go just ON THE ROOTS, not over the old treated hair, because I don't want to damage my hair by over-processing with Conair. It's a luxury that I must use with great caution. In between "Conair" treatments I will only use Keratin treatments, which are completely natural and moisturising, and can only add "structure" and health to the hair. So, given my EXTREMELY DIFFICULT HAIR, these photos are as "perfect" as I could hope for. You can see my ends - they are erratic and dry - THEY WERE BEFORE TREATMENT! And no other treatment, including salon chemical straightening treatments, solves this problem. I ALWAYS use leave in hair moisturisers and conditioning treatments (re-structurants), like many American Black women. My hair is bleached. I have to do that too because it went completely grey from pain. But we all shine on! S:
    Pros:
It actually does straighten. It is not damaging and can be used on bleached hair. THE COST IS A GOD SEND.
    Cons:
No treatments, including this treatment, can straighten really difficult hair, very well. And, possibly because this product is more "natural" than salon chemical straightening products, the hair remains a bit "kinky" and has to be styled a bit, in the morning.

    Perfectly Straight
    August 19, 2012
I had this product applied by a stylist who was really meticulous and spent a full hour just flat ironing it, so maybe that made the difference. But I only waited 12 hours before washing it, and afterwards, it dried perfectly straight, as though i had just ironed it. (or better). There is literally no frizz, and my hair lies entirely vertical. The only negative is that my hair has 0 volume :P But it did exactly what it was supposed to do! My hair now looks shiny and smooth.
    Pros:
no more frizzy hair hair looks sleek and smooth perfectly straight
    Cons:
no volume hair lies flat on the head (though this is probably supposed to happen)

    Professional frizz
    July 30, 2012
I paid over $300 to have my coarse, curly hair straightened. I ended up with burned, frizzy, falling out hair. I had to have about 3 inches cut off just to be able to style it afterward. My entire hair is fried. From the back crown to my nape , it takes more than 12 hours to dry! And I live in Phoenix! What a mess. I had very healthy, but curly hair before this. I have been told there is no cure, just time to let it grow and the dead stuff fall off.

    What a joke
    June 28, 2012
This product is an absolute joke. My hair is veryyy wavy almost curly and I bought this to make my hair more manageable i.e--faster to straighten, won't get frizzy in rain, etc. I love my waves but hateee my frizz. They get in the way of my everyday life. I figured if I have to sacrifice my waves and body of my hair to get rid of the frizz, I'll do it. Well. guess what?? This product took away ALL MY BEAUTIFUL WAVES AND LEFT ME WITH NOTHING BUT FRIZZ!!! Thats right, my hair was stick straight and frizzy. I didn't even know that was possible. I looked like one of those rockers from the 80s with incredibly straight hair but incredible amounts of frizz like they tease their hair or something. It was god awful. I was soo pissed and disappointed. I was skeptical of this product with that price and rightfully so. I bought it anyway because of all the good reviews. I did not even know it was possible to take away all the body of your hair and leave nothing but frizz. I had to always straighten my hair because I could not wear it 'wavy' since there were no waves left! The biggest reason i bought this product was to just hop out of the shower and go with little to no maintenance. Maybe rubbing a balm through my hair and thats it. But with this, I could not just shower and go. Since my hair out of the shower just looked like a big puff ball. At least before I could style my hair wavy and voluptuous. The GOOD NEWS is (thank the heavens) this totally lost all its power in about 2 months. With the waves coming back in about 2 or 3 weeks. Usually a product that only lasts 2 months is bad but in my situation I'm glad it wore off and I have my waves back! If you have frizzy hair I advise you not to purchase this product. Only buy it if you have no problems with frizz but have a little body in your hair you are looking to get rid of. Oh yea, and I have a lot of experience with hair and did apply this the proper way.
    Cons:
poor quality wore off fast misleading does not get rid of frizz

    Thermal Ionic
    June 15, 2012
I am from Australia. I recently purchased this item because I was sick of straitening my hair every morning. My hair is quite fine & cirly. Thermal Ionic is a great product, and to my surprise, when I washed my hair it stayed strait. It was also very soft and looked nice and shiney. I do recomend however, that you get someone to help you.
    Pros:
    It actually works.
    Cons:
It is very hard to use this item when doing it youre-self. One side of my hair actually ended up with a bit of a wave in it, but only because I tried to do it on my own.

It caused my hair to fall out!
    April 7, 2012
I'm very disappointed with this product. I've used it four times now in six month intervals according to directions. My six month touchups were only on the regrowth. The first three times were a charm--my hair looked great and there was no damage. But the last time, a month ago, it burned my scalp and caused great hair loss after one week--one side of my head and the top rear is balding. I'm using reconstructive conditioners but it is still falling out. I don't know if I got a bad batch or if the product slowly damaged the hair with repeated use. I am very unhappy with this product now. Its so bad I have to wear a wig or deal with people looking at my scalp. I've brought a hair regrow treatment regimen and I hope my hair grows back. My hair looks awful and is very embarassing.

I must say, it is imperative to know how to use this product. Once it is done with your type of hair, it is incredibly powerful! As I have a "melting pot hair" it was very difficult to accommodate the use, but here is my totally positive review. I also have to add that shipping from sleekhair is remarkably reliable !

    ionic hair straightener
    February 13, 2012
I found the product very easy to use, quite a simple, uncomplication method. The results were great. I have used it myself (applied by a friend), and also used it on my daughter. We both have very curly hair, and the product made a huge difference. The first time I had it done by a hairdresser it lasted 5 months. I had it done by my friend 2 months ago and it's still great, no signs of having to redo it yet.
    Pros:

I have ordered this product some days ago.....They are giving each and every thing in good quantity......I used that before one week as stated in the box information......I did all the steps very carefully but it doesn't work......If this product left my hair as they were before the use then also I felt good.......but this product have damaged my hair so deeply that now I am using different moisturizers and protein sources for my hair......but I feel that it requires more time to recover may be at least one year......I am so disappointed by this product that I don't want to give it one star also.......so my advice is that please please please never use this product..........

    Very good result
    September 18, 2011
Hair not perfectly straight but very loose waves, feels silky and soft, better than before. Frizzes all gone. I am 52, hispanic and I tried this treatment 2 weeks ago. I had previous tried curl remover from Jeri Rhedding which was good but not great. I have no breakage nor any of the other problems described in some of these review. I used it as directed for the most part. I left the treatment creme on my hair for 20 minutes, I was afraid to leave it on any longer than that. I didnt use a plastic cover but in my case, was not necessary. I used the flat iron after letting it air dry three quarters of the way . Wow what a workout doing that! I think I'll get help next time. I then applied the neutralizer and here's the secret: When my hair air dried again (I am not crazy about blow drying hair--I had all day, no hurry), I used a leave in conditioner, thermal protector (its a 10 spray-on). I flat ironed it again and left it for 72 hours. After that I used deep conditioning reconstructor after the first shampoo. It looked great and I can now flat iron my hair in no time. Five days later I used a semi-permanent color: since this has no ammonia, no danger of undoing your straightening. Unfortunately, the treatment does strip color. Maybe in another two weeks, I'll go to the salon and get permanent color done.
    Pros:
It worked as promised. Hair staighter and look good, no damage that I can see.
    Cons:
Strips color but all perms/straightener do that. Smells bad but I've had worse.

It did 50% of the job and didn't last for more than 30 days.
    Pros:
the product size is good for long hair with average thichness or fullness. It's not very expensive so yes I would recommend to a friend hoping it might work better for her hair. I used for my daughter and she doesn't even have very wavy or curly hair.
    Cons:
It is so time consuming process, and doesn't last that long.
