What it is:
One 'n Only Thermal Ionic Permanent Hair Straightener is a permanent, thermal reconditioning, ionic straightening system. One 'n Only Thermal Ionic Permanent Straightener is also known as the "Japanease Hair Straightening" or "Thermal Reconditioning" system because of Conair's revolutionary thermal ionic straightening formula. Thermal Ionic, in Conair One N Only formula, reconditions hair and restructures the cuticle so your hair lies flat and straight permanently, with a brilliant, silky, shine!

What it does:
The hair remains permanently straight until it is cut off or permed. However, the new growth will be curly and a retouch straightening service will be required after 6–8 months, depending on the rate of hair growth and the degree of curliness of the new growth.

What else you need to know:
Comes in 3 formulas:

  • Normal Formula: For use on healthy, virgin hair or hair previously colored with semi or demi permanent hair colors, processed with less than 20 volume peroxide.
  • Resistant Formula: For use on coarse, resistant virgin hair, or resistant hair that has been color-treated using semi permanent, demi permanent or no-lift permanent hair color.
  • Tinted / Highlighted / Bleached Forumula: For use on hair previously colored with permanent hair color processed with 20 volume or greater peroxide, bleached or double-processed hair.
  • There are 3 basic steps in Conair One 'n Only Thermal Ionic Permanent Hair Straightener:
    I. The first step, after washing and conditioning the hair, is to treat the hair with Thermal Ionic Step 1 Lotion. This processing lotion softens the curl by relieving the internal stresses of the hair.
II. The second step thermally reconstructs the hair into the new straight configuration. This is accomplished by pressing the hair with a hot ceramic flat iron maintained at 170°–230°C.
III. The third and final step is the treatment of the hair with the Step 2 Neutralizer. This step permanently locks the hair into a "pin-straight" configuration.

    • If you or client has ever had an allergic reaction to a perm or other cosmetic product. Do not use Thermal Ionic.
    • Check your or clients scalp. If sores, abrasions or other abnormal conditions are present, do not Thermal Ionic.
    • Examine the condition of the hair, checking for breakage, discoloration, poor elasticity or texture. Always perform a strand test. If hair breaks or discolors after test strand is dried and combed, do not use Thermal Ionic.
    • If Step 1 drips on to skin, gently remove and blot skin immediately with water-soaked cotton.
    • Always wear protective gloves when using this product.
    • Do not allow any of Step 1 or Step 2 to contact eyes. If contact occurs, flush thoroughly with cool water. Seek medical attention if irratation persist.
    • Do not use Thermal Ionic and tint hair with Permanent hair color on the same day. Wait 7 to 10 days.
    • Do not use on hair that has been previoulsy treated with henna, metallic salts or color restorers.
    • Do not use Thermal Ionic on hair that has been previously straightened with relaxers containing lye (potassium, lithium, guanidins hydroxides, and sodium). Thermal Ionic can only be applied to the new growth, so it is best that a trained professional apply this product to your hair.
    • Thermal Ionic can be used on permed hair.
    • Natural hair color may change ( 2 shades lighter ) and color-treated hair may fade.
    • Products must be used at room temperture.
    • Do not shampoo hair for 48 hours after application of Thermal Ionic.
    • Once product container has been opened, use within 24 - 48 hours, oxygen will cause the product's efficacy to slowly diminish.
    • Processing time can range between 4 to 5 hours to complete.

I did this myself at home and I absolutely LOVE IT! I can't get over how Awesome my hair looks after using it, right away! And it STAYS LOOKING GREAT each and every day since, so far. (It has been 72 hours since I am totally amazed and VERY HAPPY about this product (for tinted hair). My hair was totally dried out and damaged from over-bleaching. I had to spend so much time getting it straight before this. NOW IT'S SO QUICK TO STRAIGHTEN IT, even tho it doesn't get too wavy at all in the 72 hours since I put it in. It looks way healthier, feels way healthier, and I am EXTREMELY HAPPY. And I was relieved to find out that the smell wasn't too bad like I had heard about it. I cant believe this stuff. It's a life changer THANK YOU
ProsEasy to do. Lasts for a while so far, another too expensive, the odor wasn't even as bad as bleach and hair dyes or perms, healthy for my hair. And I am not bummed out about my hair anymore
    ConsNo gloves in the box

    Did not work
I have been putting a chemical straightner, from Walmart, on my hair for about 20 years. The formula was changed in the chemical straightner I was using and it did not work on my hair anymore. I decided to go to Sally Beauty Supply to see if I could find a chemical straightner that would work. I bought the One n' Only and went by the directions exactly. I kept the formula in my hair for the maximum amount of time allowed. I waited 48 hours before I shampooed my hair and discovered, my hair was just as curly as when I started. It smelled good, no chemical smell, but my hair was drier. I will definately not ever purchase this product again.
    ProsNo chemical smell afterwards.
ConsDid not work on my hair after going by the directions exactly and leaving the formula in my hair for the maximum amount of time stated.

Couple weeks ago I had a terrible experience in a hair salon , I went to do permanent I asked that I wanted a big curls and what I got was my hair super damaged , dry , without shine , the most ugly hair I ever saw in my life this what I got . I was super down and mad . I did cut myself some damaged parts , but was so far to be good. So this morning I called an hair salon and I made an appointment to have a hair cut I was decided cut my hair very short in reason to removed the terrible damaged. While I was waiting to go to my hair cut appointment I did a searched in internet for some thermal permanent straightener products. And I decided give it a try and if nothing changed I will have the super short hair cut. I went to Sally's and brought this product. I read the instructions and First washed my hair with the shampoo . Because my hair was so damaged and week I did not let the product more than 20 minutes . I washed dry and start iron after was completely dry , because when I tried iron it wet my hair was burning so I dried very well to iron . This product SAVE MY HAIR TO BE SHORT , My hair still not very soft but is much better , I will waiting one month and I will use this product again I recommend .
ConsSmell very strong It was hard to bread

    Did not like
It would have been nice if the hair straightener was gentle enough to use without gloves. My ideal hair straightener is the New Era Clear Gel relaxer. I wish all hair straighteners were like that product!
    ProsIt's compatible with blonde hair.
ConsIt requires gloves. Since I haven't used the product yet, I don't if it can straighten curly hair without the use of a straightening iron etc.

I cut my hair off after using this:(
my hair was bleached and colored a few times. I used this and it made 3 inches on the ends frizzy and fried. Followed directions to the t and it only relaxed my hair. it gave me looser curls, but damaged my hair, so I cut it off and am starting over with no more harsh chemicals. My friend has un colored hair and uses the regular hair thermal ionic and it works good on her hair.
Prosdid relax the curl a little.
    Consfried my ends.

    LOVE IT!
I have been using the One n' Only permanent hair straightener ( resistant formula) for approximately 8 years now and it is AMAZING! I used to get it done at the salon where it cost me upwards of $200 for a retouch so I decided to look for this product that my hair dresser was using and I found it at Sally's Beauty Supply for $32. My natural hair has extremely tight curls, almost afro-like, except my hair's texture is not as corse as most African-American women. I think that is why this product works so well is because the formula does not damage the way my hair used to get damaged from relaxers that are made for the texture and resistance of African-American hair. I usually have my sister do the first step for me and then I do the rest of it myself because they get too tired. However if you have someone that is willing to help you do it all, go for it! It usually doesn't take me more than 4 hours to go through the whole process. I use the shampoo and conditioner that is comes in the box with the relaxer and neutralizer, but I only use the conditioner on the ends of my hair (I do this because I always only have to do my roots because I never let my natural hair fully grow out). This prevents my hair that I got relaxed months ago from being unnecessarily damaged and it becomes more straight than the virgin hair at my roots (which makes it look kind of funny). If it is your first time getting all of your hair relaxed, I would suggest not to use the conditioner at all because the chemicals will NOT be as effective. One time I used the One n' Only conditioner on all of my head and after the whole process of getting my hair relaxed my hair was still curly and more damaged. Make sure to gently comb your hair to get the knots out after you shower to reduce breakage. For the first step, chemical treatment with relaxer, I use a hair brush that has stiff bristles (google this for a picture of a similar brush Spornette Little Wonder Brush from, does not have to be this brand, any cheap brush with bristles will work). When you grab the piece of hair that you are going to comb the relaxer through, make sure you pull the hair to have some tension and comb it over and over again at the roots to extend the curls as much as possible. Be careful not to leave the relaxing chemical in your hair for too long because it can damage your hair and irritate your scalp. I usually leave it in for approximately 20-30 minutes after the relaxer has been combed through all of my hair. Additionally, I have always used my Chi straightener for the thermal treatment step and find that it works great. I also get the best final results when I blow dry my hair and straighten it AFTER I have rinsed the neutralizer out (the last step). So for the next 72 hours I don't wash, rinse or get it wet at all. Sometimes I have gone a week without washing it and just keep straightening it at the roots, this has always given me the best results but sometimes I can't last that long without washing my hair. Make sure that if its your first time getting all your hair done, to get a trim right after to reduce breakage. If you are getting retouched, make sure you get a hair cut every time your get your hair retouched! (note: my scalp is somewhat sensitive, but I still have my mom or sister put the relaxer as close to my scalp as possible to ensure that all of the curly is gone. This does cause a bit of irritation on the scalp, but it is tolerable and worth it!)
Pros-Easy to do -Even if your hair at the roots is still not quite as straight as you wanted it after you've gone through and combed the relaxing chemical through your hair (step 1) and rinsed it, if you take your time when you are doing the next step ( thermal treatment using straightener) on these curly parts, it will help get the hair straighter
Cons-Can irritate the scalp -If you have cuts on your head it can be very painful because of the chemicals -Your hair will get somewhat damage (remember, its chemicals that you are using)

Wasted 3 hours of my life
To start- My package came in the mail late with part of the product spilled inside the box. I made sure to read the directions thoroughly and multiple times before starting the process and had all the recommended supplies. After finishing the entire 3 hour process my hair did not appear to be any straighter than normal, and went back to its normal curly texture immediately after my next shower (but still had the horrible burned smell). Overall I am completely unsatisfied with this product and would NOT recommend it to anyone.

Hey. I had previously done this to my hair but now I have re growth. Now on the Instrutions it saids to only apply to the regrowth hair. So do I avoid my previous relaxed hair completely besides the regrowth?
In reality it's actually pretty hard to avoid getting it on the previously relaxed hair. Just make sure you focus on the regrowth and combing it over and over again when you do step one and again focus on the regrowth when you do the thermal treatment. Also make sure to get a trim right away to reduce the damage on the ends of your hair. After you use the one n' only shampoo make sure to only put the conditioner on the parts of your hair that was relaxed before so it doesn't get more damaged and more straight!
