Rusk Thermal Shiny Str8 - Permanent Straightener is a formaldehyde-free, intensive reconditioning therapy system. Also known as the "Japanese Straightening" or "Thermal Reconditioning" system, the Rusk Thermal Str8 Internal Restructing System permanently straightens excessively curly or wavy hair while leaving it in optimum condition.

Most straightening products use harsh chemicals, which can leave the hair dry and lifeless. Less caustic products fail to straighten the hair permanently. Rusk Thermal Str8 is a unique approach, which provides internal conditioning and beneficial protection through its combination of Vitamin B5, Soy Proteins, Wheat Proteins and Keratin Amino Acids. The Rusk Thermal Str8 system is then used with the Rusk Ceramic Str8 Iron, resulting in permanently straightened hair that is smooth, shiny and healthy.

Rusk Thermal Str8 provides straight, shiny, healthy hair . Designed to be used with the Rusk Ceramic Str8 iron, this system uses Vitamin B5, Soy Protein and Keratin Amino Acids to prepare the hair for superior, permanent straightening results. This breakthrough formula contains Thermplex: a unique combination of ingredients, which, when heat-activated, will "Internally Restructure" hair from the inside out. This system straightens and conditions the hair, imparting a new, smoother texture.

Rusk Thermal Str8 Internal Restructuring System is available in 2 formulas:

  • Normal / Tinted formula: For use on healthy, virgin hair or hair previously colored with semi or demi permanent hair colors, processed with less than 20 volume peroxide.
  • Virgin / Resistant formula: For use on coarse, resistant virgin hair, or resistant hair that has been color-treated using semi permanent, demi permanent or no-lift permanent hair color.

Changed my life
I have always has super frizzy and curly hair. I got made fun of for having a white girl afro. Blowouts, serums, deep conditioning...I tried everything. Nothing smoothed my hair until my hairdresser recommended this. After several years of having these done, my hair seems to stay smoother and I get keratin treatments instead. I do still love the rusk though. I'm honestly perplexed by ppl who said it doesn't work.
ProsLeave hair shiny Hair feels softer My hair grew quicker
ConsTime consuming process Smells strong

Did not like it
I asked my hairdresser for a keratin treatment and she used this on my hair. Now it looks like i put relaxer which is what i was desperately trying to avoid. She said that it cannot be done right after putting colour in so i had to wait two weeks. Two weeks later i did it and then she said to me that this strips the colour from your hair. I had a red and it changed to brown after this was used whuch she should have advised before taking my money for the colour. Other keratin products lock in colour and gives it shine. I wish i was properly informed because this is NOT a keratin treatment. You have to be very careful and make sure the hairdressers themselves know about the products for the result you want. I give it zero stars but since you must click in the field i just presses one.

Didn't work!
I had this done at my salon. My hairdresser said it was recommended for color treated hair. I figured it would be ok because it was formaldehyde free. I waited 72 hours to wash it and after it looks almost the same as before. It actually feels coarse and dry and takes longer to dry and style! I haven't let it dry naturally yet, I have wavy hair that can get a bit frizzy at times. I was expecting this to be similar to my last keratin treatment. Last time I had my hair keratin straightened, she used a CHI product. It made my hair super straight and shiny, but it smelled awful for a week and it made my hair shades lighter. After a week I was able color again and my hair was SO smooth and dried in minutes. I am so disappointed in this product and am afraid to try another straightener for fear it will damage my hair. So angry and frustrated and this cost me over $300!
ProsNone!
ConsDidn't work, left hair dry and coarse, no shine, now when I style hair looks lifeless and damaged. Do not use this product!

For Tinted Hair - Amazing result
Had this done a few years ago, absolutely chuffed to bits, amazing outcome. Can wash my hair and leave it, or dry it, it's superb. It lasted 'nine' months the first time. Now struggling to source this amazing product in the UK. Absolutely gutted I'm struggling to find it.
ProsBrilliant results

Severely Damaged Hair
I had this treatment done on April 18, 2016 .. never has my hair been damaged until now. To say that I am sick over this is putting it mildly. I have very wavy hair and had both the Keratin and Brazilian treatments done in the past with beautiful results. I typically have it straightened every 7 to 8 months. Enter new salon, new hairdresser. This product was used without my knowledge (evan after asking 3 times which product is being used) ... I trusted the stylist knew what she was doing. The process was a disaster .. my hair is more unruly now than ever, feels like there is sand in it, and severely damaged. It takes me over an hour (the length is just below my neck) to dry and straighten as well as using at least 5 different styling products. With the Keratin and Brazilian treatments, it literally took me 15 minutes to do my hair with silky, smooth results (and no products needed). I am consulting with another styllst (different salon) as to what my options are regarding the damage to my hair.

Did not straighten my wavy hair
I typically have my hair straightened with a different product every 9 months. After washing, I can let it air dry, without using any heat it is straight and shiny. This time, I went to a new place and the hairdresser used the Rusk Str8 system. By day 2 after the treatment some of my wave was returning. I waited 4 days to wash - and my hair has the same wave on the regrowth as it did before the treatment, but now my hair feels processed and is dry, heavy and coarse. This did not straighten my hair and left it damaged. My hairdresser claimed she had taught classes on straightening systems, and it was the product, not her iron or technique. I spent 5 hours, $500 to have my hair tugged on and damaged. I am afraid to have it redone with any other product now.
ConsLeft my hair damaged without any straightening

Changed my life
I have thick, coarse, spiral curly hair. I've been using this product for the last 5 years. It makes my hair softer, smoother and cuts down straightening time by an hour or more. My hair is slightly wavy after using it.

Careful, This product does contain a 'relaxer' chemical....
I decided to have this process performed on my daughters thick, curly, ethnic hair. Her hair had become such a problem to do, since I stopped putting relaxer in it. My friend recommended the product. Her sister is a stylist and put it in my friends children hair as well as her own. Problem, they insisted there was no relaxer in the product. So I agreed. After she washed my daughters hair and started applying the product, I smelled the distinct smell of relaxer! I told her, Hey, that's relaxer, she insisted it was not, that it was a keratin treatment. No, I told her to give me the box. First ingredient, ammonium thioglycolate. This is whats used in Jheri Curls, Wave Nouveau, Affirm, etc. I was soo upset. I'm a Chemistry Graduate, I know perm when I smell it. Anyway, then she was leaving it on for what seemed to me a long time. She said it could stay on indefinitely. Wrong, I know better. I told her to wash it out after 15min! OK, so she continued the process, and my daughters hair did come out beautiful. It was shiny and bone straight. I dont think even the Dominican round brush could have done a better job. But I knew better not to be too elated. Because with the time she left the thio on her hair and the fact I know my daughters hair really doesnt do well with chemicals, time would be the true deciding factor. It has been 3 months now, and I have noticed breakage in my daughters hair. Not much and in hidden areas, but those first couple of weeks I was sweeping alot of hair off the floor. I try to keep it moisturized ( remember, Thio must be moist!! or it dries out your hair and will make it dull and brittle) but it is dry still. Her hair grows extremely fast and now it really looks like she could use another visit. But I was told they dont do a touch up, they just do they whole process all over again. Not sure if I want that now...Maybe I'll wait another couple of months.
ProsDefinitely Shiny and Bone Straight after initial process. Maintenance of my daughters hair is 100% easier and less time consuming.
ConsAlthough there may not be any Formaldehyde, There is Ammonium Thioglycolate (perm/relaxer) Pick your poison

I used this product on a client 2 weeks ago...I had more than half of the product left. I poured out what I needed & imediately sealed the product back up. I would like to use the rest on a friend, I know the instructions say use within 48 hours of opening but my question is will it harm the hair at all by using it or will it just not be as strong? I don't want to take any chance of damaging it.

can I use this Rusk permanent straightener for very kinky African American or black people hair?
Hi, the the Rusk St8 works on kinky hair. Since thus it is a thio perm (versus a sodium hydrixode perm AKA "relaxer" or "perm" ) it is slightly less damaging. However as with any straightener you still must be cautious. If your hair is kinky and fine then leave it on for as long as suggested however if its is kinky coarse then you may need to leave it on for 15 more than recommended. But don't expect bone straight, that comes with a good blow dry and flat iron afterwards. It will give you more of a textured look which will allow you to wear your hair like Tray Ellis Ross when not blown straight. So it important for you to understand that you hair will still have texture but no longer tight and coiling. More of a medium wave texture. the consistency of the product is like hair conditioner, not pasty like relaxers so it needs extra combing through for more tightly coiled textures. Retouches should be applied to roots only, if your hair grows slow like many kinky textures than every 3 months is how often the roots should be retouched. If your hair is totally virgin then I highly recommend going to a high end salon, steer clear of traditional black corner shop salons that only use old school relaxers. It may be a hunt but call around to the high end spots ( be prepared to shell out some cash) and inquire during a thorough consultation if the stylist is familiar with "Japanese straight perms on kinky hair" since they are more familiar with a range of hair textures and their processes. You will have to take it easy on heat styling as with ANY processed hair but you will feel the difference that you hair will not feel quite as rough as a relaxer makes the hair feel. If you already have a relaxer on your ends it is IMPERATIVE that the Rusk St8 is not applied on that already processed hair. Overlapping like that will make the hair break off within the week, these chemicals are never to be mixed. So if you can cut off the already relaxed hair then you can start fresh with the application but if you can't then be prepared for a line of demarcation ( an inch of kink) between the old relaxed hair and the newly St8 hair. But afer the roots get long enough you cut those old ends off. This is why I say you need to go to a professional since they know better how to handle transitioning from sodium hydroxide perms to thio perms safely. If you stay away from the heat and adopt a more natural style like Tracy Ellis Ross you'll be surprised at how nice and full and long your hair can get. It doesn't take the volume away like relaxers do so your hair will feel puffy but you can still run your hands through it and it won't kink up when it's humid outside after you've blown and flat ironed it out. It will just be straight but thick! Good luck \( ^_^)/ I am a mixed race licensed cosmetologist from NYC and a Licensed Practical Nurse. I worked in the industry as a stylist for ten years and specialized in texture, color and hair replacement. I Have kinky hair that is fine and also coarse in some spots and have used Rusk for 11 years.

So I had this done about 3 months ago and its amazing. My stylist used the Normal texture. I purchased the resistant one myself recently and was wondering if anyone has reapplied it a second or more time all over the hair OR just the regrowth hair part at the top? Does it matter? I wanted to reapply it all over my hair again. Would appreciate your response. Thanks!

I apologize for not answering earlier. I would think that the product would let you know when you can re-do you hair safely. You idea about applying it to the roots only is a good idea. You need to be careful about re-applying it too soon. Isn't there a number in the information

my client has colored treated hair with a level 6 hair color, she has very coarse curly eghptian hair with hard to cover gray can I use this product on her, I have been using the la brazilian keritan treatment on her and even the strongest one only lasts maybe 2 wks and still takes me an hour to flat iron afterwards, she really wants something stronger but all the japanese straighters say to use on semi or demi and we use 20 volume. can you suggest something better but not real damaging?
Just know that this is a "permanent" straightening system. Make sure that your client is looking for permanent results, and it is recommended to have at least 4 inches of regrowth for touch ups.( The Brazilian Treatments and those similar are NOT permanent systems and last up to 8-10 weeks if applied accurately.) In regards to the color, you can use this on color-treated hair with no more than a 20 vol application and absolutely NO bleached hair, because it WILL break. I suggest applying this service before your color service, this system will slightly lighten your hair color. The results are Great!

How long do u leave the solution and how long does it last?
Refer to the directions for the length of time the relaxer needs to stay on your hair. I usually leave it for 30-35 minutes, depending on the knot test. My relaxers have lasted anywhere from 6 months to 14 months! I honestly think it depends on the season and any other factors (i.e., swimming, sun, sweating, and even how often you wash your hair.) When I first started using the relaxer, I was told to only wash my hair every 2- days. Hope this helps!

Im not sure if you meant rinse or shampoo after application when you say "wash". But just for clarification this a thio perm which you NEVER shampoo afterwards, only rinse with water then apply neutralizer to stop any further action, then condition, then blow, then flat iron. Washing can cause texture to revert thus not getting the full benefit of the product.

This product is the same as the product used back in the 1980's for curly perms, except you use it to straighten your hair instead of rollers to make it curly. It is used in the same way, has the same odor nad just like a curly perm, you cannot wash your hair for 72 hours or it dulls the effect of the treatment.
