This works great.
This color remover works really well. But you have to follow the directions exactly including using a 10 volume developer as the last step, otherwise the hair will reoxidize and you will have to start all over (I learned this the hard way, lol!). Of course, it will not restore your natural color and your will be orange and you will have recolor, but you'll need to use a shade that is two to three shades lighter than the shade you ultimately want because your hair will now be more porous and will accept color faster and will turn out darker so you must go several levels lighter. If you do this, and correct for the orange by using a shade with a blue base, you will have a good end result. I used Wella Koleston and the /2 series and the /8 series both have a blue base and will neutralize the resulting orange. It works like a charm if you know what you are doing. And there's no damage from Vanish. Just vigorously shampoo the old color out and you'll be good to go. Be sure you have enough Vanish to do your whole head. One application is enough for should length hair, just fyi. It works like a charm. I highly recommend it.

This stuff is the bomb!
I have used a few other hair color removers, including Jheri Reddings, and this FAR and away the BEST there is. My color was lifted down to the natural color where I had not bleached and to the exact shade of pre-lightened I'd originally achieved. That part absolutely amazed me. The best though was how great my hair felt afterwards, soft, clean, undamaged. Better than before. The smell that seems to be avoidable in this chemical process eventually made itself known in my windowless bathroom during a cold spell. I guess I could have run the vent fan for 15 minutes, but I didn't want to use the electricity. Yet while other removers have left this smell in my hair as well, Vanish did not. Just in my admittedly small and not a lot of air circulation bath and hallway. It cleared within 36 hours and was never unbearable, just something I noticed was there. Oh, there is a pretty good amount of product in the package. For shoulder length hair, you'd need two, but I only did a part of my head and I have product left over. Would definitely recommend to a friend!
ProsWorks like a dream! Nice smell left in hair. Leaves hair in GREAT condition.
ConsThere is a bad but not unmanageable smell left in the area in which the product was applied.

Saved my hair and me
Changed hair color product, wanted medium strawberry blond ended up dark wine red!!! VANISH brought me back to my natural light/medium (blah) brown. Two hours later I reached my goal of fabulousness without damage to my hair. Saved me from walking around with too harsh hair color until it faded. Definitely lived up to expectations.
ProsIT WORKS!!!!!

great product
This works well without damaging your hair. It can be a bit drying. Also, it you have dark hair dye it may take a couple boxes to get it out or even more if the dye is cheap.

Love this stuff
First of all in so annoyed that I didn't know this existed before. Every time I went to a salon to lighten my hair they would ask if I color it, I'd say yes and they would either say it's too dark to go lighter or use bleach and damage it. If any salon person told me to use this at home and come back for them to work on my hair after I would have. It's very time consuming, but well worth it. It took me hours to do it, but most likely it'll do it again. Even when I dye my hair medium blonde it'll come out dark brown, so this will come in handy.
ProsIt works, it does what it says.
ConsTime consuming

Goodbye Harsh Bleach!
My hair has been black for YEARS not to mention with box dye!!! I have tried bleach a couple times and it is so damaging on my hair. I wanted to just get rid of boring black and get to a nice brunette. I actually got to a 5g, light golden Brown, and I love it!!!
ProsNon-damaging, really works, not expensive, did it on my own
ConsThe only con is the stuff stinks!!!! Do not leave it in your bathroom garbage can when you're done. I did and came home the next day and my house literally smelled like skunk. also you have to wash your hair sooo much so it takes forever depending on how many applications. my scalp hurt so bad afterwards! But would I do this again AND recommend it to others? YES!

Wow, couldn't believe the results.
I've been coloring my hair for 15+ years, and I change colors often. I've used a number of color removers, and they've all left my hair fried. Not Vanish, my hair felt fine after using it. It was really dry from all the shampooing, but well worth the results. The color was gone, and my hair was still healthy.

Best color remover
Smells a bit odd but does what it says it will. Colored my blonde hair too dark with a cheap color from a local retailer, it was a nightmare. I used this product to remove the dark color and it left my hair in good condition and removed the unwanted pigments. It has an odd smell due to the sulphur but the smell isn't nearly as bad as some hair colors that contain ammonia or even as damaging.
ProsWorks great doesn't over dry hair Removes unwanted color

I had bleached my hair and wanted lavender, I had it done professionally, but the dye left it rich bright purple. Will this product remove bright purple? Ideally I'd like lavender, but I am afraid it will turn pink, any advise?
It kind of depends upon whether the color your colorist used is permanent, demi or semi. The product, Vanish, is really designed for permanent color, which is deposited under the cuticle, if I understand the process correctly. Demi & semi products are deposited on top of the cuticle, which is why they eventually wash out almost entirely. Vanish may help to lift some of the bright purple, but it's really difficult to say for sure. I would definitely contact the colorist to find out what type of color they used. Not just the brand, but the type, i.e., permanent, demi or semi. Also find out what volume of developer. If only a 10 volume or less developer was used, this is going to wash out pretty fast anyway. If a 20, well, that's most likely permanent color and Vanish is likely to help a lot! Follow the instructions very carefully. There are two different processes: one that lightens and one that removes entirely down to the color before you started and some additional steps! .

So if you have several layers of color on your hair, will this take all of that off? Will it take out color that's been on your hair for months?
Yes, all hair color corrector will work like a bleach. Only difference would be that a corrector is more water based and gentle to the hair and must only be applied where hair color exists, never overlapping virgin hair. This will lighten the virgin root to be blonde.

Once it's mixed (I used the shampoo and Vanish mixture): how long do I have to use it. I know I don't have too long just wondering if it would be good for a few hours after mixed. I want to use it again should I need to remove more color.

I have decided I want to simply stop coloring my hair and go grey. I am about 75% grey, and have always only used Clairol Natural Instincts shades in the dark blonde (9N) to light brown (13 or 14) range. My hair is currently colored a shade somewhere in this dark neutral blonde/light ash brown range. Is Vanish suitable for simply lightening the color I have on my hair so it is not as starkly different from my grey roots, or is a follow-up color always needed after using Vanish? I realize I will not be able to remove the color completely; just trying to reduce the current color intensity so there is less contrast to the incoming grey. Thanks.
I highly suggest going to http://killerstrands.blogspot.com/search/label/Gray%20Hair . There is alot of very informative information here. There are links all the way down on the left to educate yourself. There simply is not room enough here.

I have very long, thick hair that I need to take color off of. From the top of my head to the end of my hair measures 35 inches. Realistically, how many boxes of Vanish will I need if I were only going to do one application?
